Q. |
I just installed a new version/update of my
Anti-Virus and now I'm no longer able to access the internet. What can I
do?
|
| A. |
Check to see if the version you installed comes with
a security component. Many popular security systems like Norton
Security, Norton 360, MacAfee Security, and Micro Trend Security include
a firewall component that will need to be tailored to your system in
order to use the internet. Follow these simple rules:
-
When installing a new antivirus program or a different
brand other then
your current one, make sure all previous antivirus programs have been
uninstalled.
-
Once you have installed your new version, check the firewall
access. If you do not have access to the internet, you'll need to
unblock your access port from the firewall setting. Follow your
software manual for this. One simple trick you can try is to disable
the firewall temporarily, then access the internet. Once on the
internet, enable your firewall. Most often, the firewall will ask if
you want to allow or 'Unblock' access to this port. Say yes and continue.

| Q. |
Why is our internet so slow?
|
| A. |
This can be one of two reasons:
First, we'll need to know what type of connection you are using. If
its dialup, there is not much help anyone can give you. Dialup has a
maximum of 54Mbps and most dialup modems only support 50Mbps.
If your connection is DSL, Cable, or a T-1 line:
-
Your internet provider has you set at a slow connection speed.
Contact your service provider and ask them at what access speed you are
contracted for. There should be two setting, A Download Speed and an
Upload speed, both measured in KB/sec transfer rate. You can run a
simple test on your system by going to
www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and choosing a city nearest
you for a transmission test. Its free and easy to use. Mind you, if
you run the test, make sure your computer is hardwired to the
internet and your port access is 100Mbps. DO NOT run the test from a
wireless port access as this will give you a false reading. You want
to know the actual speed from your service provider and this can
only be perform by attaching your computer to an ethernet port on
your router. Once you have run the test, compare them to the numbers
your provider has given you. Your test won't always match the
providers, but you should be within 5% as a rule. If the
numbers are way out of whack, then you need to have your provider
send a technician out and check the line coming into your house. In
some cases this is a charge, however if they find a problems the
fees are usually waived. You'll need to check first with your provider
regarding there policy. You should also check your cable/DSL modem
speed, some older models do not support the hi transmission rates,
in which case your modem will need to be replaced. If you are
renting the modem from your provider, there is no cost to switch it
out, but they may charge you to come out and install it for you.
